Source: A bicyclist is dead after being struck by a vehicle near Lunken Airport Tuesday morning. Cincinnati police say 49-year-old Melvin White was traveling northbound on Wilmer Avenue in a Chevrolet Malibu, when he rear ended 27-year-old Andrew Gast on his bicycle at 620 Wilmer Avenue at about 6:10 a.m. Emergency crews transported Gast to University Hospital with life threatening injuries. He died a short time later. White stayed at the scene following the crash, according to officials. Officials closed Wilmer Avenue between Airport Road and Beechmont Road to traffic while they investigated the crash. Authorities have not released any additional details at this time, including what led to the accident. The Cincinnati traffic unit is continuing to investigate the crash. If you have any information about the incident, contact the traffic unit at (513) 352-2514. No charges have been filed at this time. The Cincinnati Cycle Club hosted a Memorial Ride for Gast at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The ride replaced the club’s normal Tuesday night ride and left from Oakley Cycles. Cyclists rode down to the scene of the accident for a moment of silence and then down Riverside and through the city in Gast’s honor. Updated Source: A ghost bike now occupies a spot along Wilmer Avenue, near Lunken Park Drive. The bike, painted entirely white, serves as a memorial to Andrew Gast, a cyclist who was struck by a motorist at that location on Aug. 28. The 27-year-old who lived Downtown, an investment manager and trust asset manager for Fifth Third Bank, died at University Hospital. At last check, no charges had been filed against the driver; police have said he is cooperating with an investigation that could take several weeks.
