Saturday evening shortly after 6:30 p.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a hit and run fatal crash involving a bicyclist that occurred on LA Hwy 742 near St. Peter Ave. in St. Landry Parish. The incident took the life of 58 year old Port Barre resident Betty J. Noel. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that Noel was riding a bicycle westbound on LA 742 in the eastbound lane near St. Peter Ave. At the same time, an unidentified vehicle was traveling eastbound on LA 742. For unknown reasons the front right section of the vehicle struck Noel's bicycle, ultimately causing fatal injuries to Noel. The unidentified vehicle then fled the scene. Impairment on the part of Noel is unknown at this time. State Troopers have submitted a toxicology sample from Noel to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for further analysis. Troopers were unable to determine exactly what type of vehicle was involved in the crash, but based on evidence left at the scene do believe it may possibly be some type of light-colored pickup truck. The vehicle will possibly have damage to the right front bumper and fender area, right front headlight and windshield, and possibly down the right side. ****** Louisiana Sate Police reported that 30-year-old Corey Doucet was arrested late Saturday night after being involved an accident that killed 58-year-old Betty J. Noel. Ms. Noel was riding a bicycle along Louisiana State Route 742 near the intersection with St. Peter Avenue when she was hit at 6:30 p.m. Mr. Doucet left the scene of the accident and was arrested later Saturday night. He is facing charges of hit-and-run, negligent homicide, and obstruction of justice.
