A 34-year-old Indianapolis man died early this afternoon when he was struck by a dump truck while riding a bicycle at a Far Southside Indianapolis intersection. Brian K. Lawson, a Southside resident, was pronounced dead at the intersection of Banta Road and Madison Avenue shortly after 12:30 p.m., police said. Michael R. Casse, 60, Greenwood, drove the truck owned by Laura Kopetsky Tri Axle Inc. Casse said he stopped for a red light while westbound on Banta, waited for Madison Avenue traffic to pass, and turned right onto northbound Madison, making a wide right turn to the far left lane due to the trucks’ turning radius, according to an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department report. Casse told police he felt the truck go over what he thought was a trash bag. After stopping, he noticed someone lying next to a bike. A witness told police he saw the bicyclist traveling south on Madison on the sidewalk and then he saw the truck going over something due to the way truck lifted. The fatal accident remains under investigation.
