A bicyclist who was hit by a drunk driver in Grand Prairie last month died at John Peter Smith Hospital early Saturday morning. Calvin Washingon, 53, was riding his bike on Polo Road near the intersection with Independence Trail at around 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 27 when he was hit from behind by a Kia sedan. Washington, a Grand Prairie resident, was thrown over the top of the car and suffered critical injuries, even though he was wearing a helmet. He was taken by helicopter to Fort Worth, where he remained hospitalized until his death. Police said they determined soon after the wreck that the driver of the Kia, 60-year-old Matthew Bonnette, was intoxicated. He was arrested at the scene and charged with intoxicated assault, which in Texas carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. After Washington’s death, those charges have been upgraded to intoxication manslaughter, which can mean a maximum of 20 years in prison.
