Source: Cris Joel Sikkila, 51, of Fowlerville died after he was hit by a vehicle on the free bridge at about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday evening. According to the Grosse Ile Police Department, it appears that he was crossing the bridge on his bicycle when he fell into the traffic lane and was hit by a Grosse Ile man’s vehicle as he was driving west on the bridge. Alcohol may have been a factor regarding the bicyclist. Sikkila was sent to Oakwood Southshore Medical Center, where he later died. An accident reconstructionist was on scene and required the closure of the free bridge for about 1 1/2 hours, when traffic was rerouted to the toll bridge. The driver of the vehicle is not being identified due to the ongoing investigation, but the driver does not appear to be at fault in the accident, according to the Grosse Ile Police Department.
