Source: Ron Yukelson, associate administrator with Sierra Vista hospital, issued the following statement about Damian Horstman today to hospital employees: "It is with great sadness that we tell you we have tragically lost a member of the Sierra Vista family and our local medical community. Earlier today Dr. Damian Horstman lost his life while enjoying one of his life’s passions when he was hit by a truck while riding his bicycle. UPDATE 11:45 a.m.: The man killed this morning when his bicycle collided with a semi truck has been identified as Damian Horstman, 39, an anesthesiologist at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center. Horstman has worked at the hospital since February 2008 and was the chief of anesthesia and vice chief of staff. Hortsman was in line to be the next chief of staff. Also, the California Highway Patrol has identified the truck driver as Salvador G. Sandoval, 52, of Santa Maria. UPDATE 10 a.m.: The CHP has confirmed that the cyclist who was hit by a semi-truck at the intersection of Ontario Road and South Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo around 8 a.m. has died. Investigators at the scene say it appears the cyclist had come from Ontario Road onto South Higuera Street into the path of the semi-truck. The truck driver, traveling southbound toward the Highway 101 onramp, was not able to stop the truck in time, crashing into the cyclist with the front right side of the truck. Paramedics arrived at the scene and transported the victim to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center, where he died of his injuries shortly after. Investigators say it does not appear that the truck driver, who was driving the speed limit, was at fault. Damian Horstman was my brother.  We are still trying to make sense of this tragedy.  My brother was an avd cyclist and triathlete.  He leaves behind a wife and two young sons, ages 2 and 4.  We have established an education fund, http://www.fortheirkids.org and g,reatly appreciate any assistance in helping to fund the future for these two incredible kids.

I live in Paso Robles and I am a close friend to Joan Rowe, the children’s grandmother.  During a recent visit, Joan talked highly about her wonderful daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren.  Our family is so sad to hear about this tragedy; it is a good deed to setup the education fund for the children.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.  Debby Hobbs

I am the mother of Damian Horstman. He was a kind, wonderful, responsible man and skilled cyclist. That day he was riding to work—wearing his helmet—-when something went terribly wrong. It just doesn’t add up.
Any assistance in assuring the children will receive the education he wanted them have would be deeply appreciated.
