Source: David Hassler was riding a bicycle was pronounced dead Friday after he fell into traffic on Penn Avenue and struck the side of a moving sport utility vehicle, according to South Heidelberg Township police. The man, who was in his 70s and lived in the area, was pronounced dead in the 4900 block of Penn Avenue, township police said. An autopsy is scheduled for this morning in Reading Hospital. Police and investigators from the coroner's office said they would not be releasing the rider's name until after the autopsy, adding that an investigation is continuing. Witnesses told police that the man was riding a bicycle east on the shoulder of the eastbound lane about 3 p.m. when he fell into traffic and struck the side of the eastbound SUV. Police did not release the name of the driver and said the vehicle sustained minor damage. Police said the rider was wearing a helmet and the SUV driver stopped. Fire police closed Penn Avenue between Krick Lane and South Church Road for about two hours during the police investigation. Traffic was backed up for miles in both directions.
