Source: An Oroville man who was in the last stages of cancer didn't show up at his mother's motel room last Thursday because he was hit by a bicycle, and later died. Laura Thacker had come to visit her son, David Thacker, 35. The plan was for him to arrive at the motel, and she would take him to a radiation treatment in Chico. When he didn't show up, she called and learned he had been seriously injured while riding across Oro Dam Boulevard. "He was a very caring person," Laura Thacker said. She said he had three children and is survived by two brothers, Eddie and John Thacker. The accident took place at 8:27 a.m. Thursday while Thacker was riding north on Lincoln Street, explained Oroville Police Lt. Allen Byers. Thacker ran through the red light at the Oro Dam Boulevard intersection and rode directly in front of a vehicle driven by Matthew Begdia, 32, of Chico, Byers said. Thacker was taken to Enloe Medical Center in Chico with major head injuries. The police department just learned Monday that Thacker had died, Byers said. Thacker's sister-in-law, Angie Thacker, said she had driven past the accident right after it happened, but she didn't know it was her brother-in-law. David Thacker was pronounced brain-dead last Friday, she said, and stopped breathing Saturday after being taken off life support. She said they can't plan a memorial service until after an autopsy.
