Source: Augusta police are investigating the death of a bicyclist Friday evening. Police said they got a call at about 1:20 p.m. about a crash on Ward Road near the intersection of Hayes Road. When the officers arrived they found 49-year-old Gary Lacasse of Augusta lying in the southbound lane along with his bike, according to police. Investigators say Lacasse died at the scene and his body was taken to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy. Police say they are still trying to determine what exactly happened to Lacasse. Follow Up Source: Authorities are still trying to determine what killed a city man a week after he was found lying underneath his bicycle on Ward Road. Augusta Police Lt. Keith Brann said Thursday that police are still unsure what caused 50-year-old Gary Lacasse to fall off his bicycle the afternoon of July 6. Police initially described the case as an apparent hit-and-run crash. Detectives continue to look into the incident while awaiting final results from the state medical examiner, which could take a couple more weeks. "There has not been a determination of whether there was a hit-and-run accident," Brann said. Lacasse died at the scene of the crash, which occurred around 1:15 p.m. A passer-by found him lying underneath his bicycle at the Hayes Road intersection. He was unconscious and breathing when he was first discovered, but died shortly after. Lacasse, who was not wearing a helmet, was injured in the crash. Police have said he appeared to be riding south at the time of the accident. There were no vehicles in the area when the passerby discovered Lacasse.
