WESTFIELD – A 60-year-old bicyclist was hit by a car and killed at about noon on Sunday. Howard Beardslee, of Westfield, was traveling westbound on Western Avenue near Westfield State University when he was struck by a 2007 Ford Explorer which was traveling in the same direction, according to the Westfield Police Department. Beardslee was taken to Noble Hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced dead. The car was driven by Brian Benoit, 32, of Westfield. No citations were immediately issued, police said. The accident is being investigated by the Westfield Police Department’s Traffic Bureau, which is being assisted by the Massachusetts State Police Collision, Analysis and Reconstruction Section. More information about the circumstances of the crash was unavailable Sunday. Western Avenue was closed for several hours while the accident was investigated. It has been opened again, police said.
