Source: Authorities have identified the bicyclist killed in a crash on the city's North Side late Thursday. James Shepard, 44, was riding a bike on Basse Road near Treeline Park when he was rear-ended by a Ford Explorer about 10:30 p.m., according to San Antonio Police. Shepard was riding on the right edge of the street with bags of groceries on his handlebars at the time of the accident, police said. Witnesses said he was hit after suddenly veering left into traffic, possibly after losing control of the handlebars because of the weight of the bags. The bike did not have lights. The SUV's driver told police that he did not see Shepard in time to avoid hitting him.
