Source: An Aurora firefighter who was riding his bicycle to work was hit and killed Friday. Jason Murphy was hit by a vehicle at 7:32 a.m. Aurora Police say it happened in the crosswalk which provides access to Summit Elementary School, which is on E.Quincy Ave. between S. Buckley Rd. and S. Reservoir Rd. “Aurora Fire crews responded, treated Jason and transported him to a local hospital with serious injuries. While being treated in the Emergency Department, Firefighter Murphy passed away,” says Aurora Fire Department spokesman Allen Robnett. Investigators say Murphy was in the crosswalk. A 2002 Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by 49-year-old William Nale of Aurora hit him. Police say Nale was battling the morning sun and wasn’t able to see the traffic light or Murphy in the crosswalk. Nale was cited for Careless Driving Resulting in Death and Failure to Provide Proof of Insurance Upon Request. “This is a devastating loss to Jason’s family and the Aurora Fire Department,” Robnett says. Murphy joined the Aurora Fire Dept. in February 2003. “Our thoughts, our hearts, and our prayers go out to Jason’s family. The Aurora Fire Department is grieving the loss of a colleague and a great friend,” Robnett says.
