SANTA ANA – A 58-year-old man died Friday night while riding a bicycle in the Santa Ana river trail Friday night after colliding with another bicyclist. Johnathan Coontz, of Costa Mesa, was riding an Electra Cruiser bicycle in the northbound lane of the bike trail just north of Atlanta Avenue around 6 p.m., officials said. For an unknown reason, he drifted into the southbound lane, hitting another bicyclist, said CHP dispatcher Laura Smart. Coontz was taken to the Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later, officials said. The other bicyclist, a 52-year-old from Midway City, also was taken to the hospital, Smart said. The cause of death has yet to be determined by the Orange County Coroner's Office, as the autopsy results are pending.
