Source: Police have released the names of the victim and driver in the fatal bicycle crash that occurred Friday on Clairemont Avenue. Kirk D. Cartwright, 51, of Eau Claire died at a local hospital shortly after being struck by a vehicle just after 12:30 p.m. as he rode his bicycle along the bike path in the 1100 block of West Clairemont Avenue. The vehicle was driven by Archie R. Vanwormer, 90, of Eau Claire. Vanwormer's vehicle was westbound on Clairemont Avenue when it entered the bike path at Hendrickson Drive and collided with Cartwright, who also was heading westbound. Police said Vanwormer's vehicle dragged the bicycle about 200 feet and continued driving on the bike path until Craig Road. Police said alcohol wasn't a factor in the crash and haven't confirmed if Vanwormer fell asleep, had a medical issue or was confused. The investigation has been turned over to the Eau Claire Police Department crash reconstruction team, which was working at the crash site Sunday. Vanwormer was referred to the state Department of Transportation for a review of his license status.
