Source: A bicyclist from Trinity has died after he was involved in an accident on Unity Street in Thomasville, according to the Thomasville Police Department. Thomasville officers responded to the 1300 block of Unity Street in reference to a reported collision involving a bicyclist at 5:01 p.m. Thursday. Sgt. John Elgin of the Thomasville Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit said witnesses stopped to render aid to 71-year-old Leroy D. Lerch. Upon arrival of officers, Lerch was found unconscious and responsive, according to a TPD news release. Lerch was transported to Thomasville Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. A preliminary investigation indicates Lerch was traveling south on Unity Street and had traveled off the roadway to the right and struck a concrete piping inside the roadside ditch area. Elgin confirmed Lerch was wearing a helmet and was not riding with other bicyclists. Factors in the accident were unknown Friday. His body, Elgin said, has been sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Chapel Hill. The results should be returned to the Thomasville Police Department in two to four weeks, the sergeant said. "We are still investigating," Elgin, the lead investigator of the bicycle fatality, said Friday. The Thomasville Police Department, Davidson County Emergency Services and Thomasville Fire Department responded to the accident.
