Two years ago, Michael Dean Newton was diagnosed with cancer. For exercise, Newton, 55, often rode his bicycle to destinations around Indiana, even as far as Florida. On Tuesday, during one of those rides, Newton was struck and killed on Indiana 67 shortly after leaving his southside Anderson residence. Madison County sheriff’s deputies said Newton was heading south on the highway and nearing County Road 600 South. Behind him, also southbound, was a 16-foot-long Ryder box truck driven by James Patrick Cain, 48, of Indianapolis. Deputies said the truck struck Newton, who died at the scene. Sheriff’s deputies were investigating the crash Tuesday afternoon that closed southbound Ind. 67 from Interstate 69 to County Road 600 South for a few hours. The accident was reported at 6:13 a.m. during dark, pre-dawn hours. Sunrise is at 7:21 a.m. Witnesses told Pendleton police that Newton was in the right-hand lane. The accident is under investigation. No charges had been filed. On July 15, during a ride to Brown County, Newton was struck by a car about nine miles south of Shelbyville, said his mother, Phyllis Newton, who is from Anderson. He was hospitalized for a week with nine broken ribs, a subdural hematoma and a cracked bone in his upper arm. He returned to bicycling within weeks.
