Source: We're learning more details about exactly what happened when the man was hit by a UPS truck. At about three in the afternoon yesterday Michael Hutchings was traveling east bound on Highway 217. DPS State Trooper Gabriel Medrano says that's when he veered into the adjacent lane and a UPS truck clipped him. "Looks like the bicycle rider may have drifted over to the left and actually made contact as the UPS driver was driving by his bicycle and struck him in the head with a rear-view mirror," Medrano said. He was pronounced dead at the scene and they say he wasn't wearing a helmet. Cyclist and Hills Sport Shop Service Manager Ian Margave says that's something you don't mess with. "Obviously a helmet is rule number one I wouldn't recommend riding at all whether you're on the street or on trails without a helmet," Margave said. Margave says he was nearly ran off the road by a driver. And that cyclists need to be aware of their surroundings at all times. "Unfortunately as cyclists we've got to be aware of everything's that's around us because nobody else is really paying attention," Margave said. But Share the Road says that even with the amount of space that Hutchings had, the driver is also responsible for their actions. "Vehicles are supposed to give bicyclists, give them three feet between a cyclist or motorcyclist on the road," Share the Road Vice President Robyn Willis said. "So if there had been three between him and the driver of the truck then he would not have been hit." In reference to that last statement from Share the Road, State Trooper Medrano says there's ten feet on either side of Highway 217 for cyclists to ride Right now the truck driver doesn't face any charges, but police are still investigating the accident. Hutchings was from Bossier City, Lousiana. DPS says he was here visiting friends.
