Source: A 1998 Donelson Christian Academy graduate was killed late Wednesday evening riding a bicycle when he was hit by a car near his home in the Lakewood-Old Hickory community. Michael Rivas, 31, of Lakeshore Drive, was struck from behind by a four-door Subaru going south on Old Hickory Boulevard near 28th Street around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said. Rivas, also a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University, had just returned from eating out at a nearby restaurant, according to his younger brother Chris Rivas, 30. Ride of Silence, an annual event in which cyclists ride in different locations around the country in memory of those who have died on a bike, was held Wednesday in Nashville at Centennial Park. Michael Rivas did not attend the Ride of Silence, Chris Rivas said. “He liked riding, he’s an outdoorsman,’’ said Chris Rivas, 30, and part-owner of the Boulevard Barber & Style shop in Lakewood. “He’d (ride his bicycle) a few times a week.’’ Michael Rivas was pronounced dead at the scene after the accident in which police said he flipped back over the Subaru and landed in the southbound outside lane. It wasn’t a route Chris Rivas believed his brother took often with a bicycle. The driver of the Subaru was Brandon Williams, 23, of Terry Lane. Williams told police he didn’t see the cyclist and didn’t know what he hit until stopping and getting out of the vehicle. The roadway in the area has lights, Metro Police Department Capt. Ken Walburn said. There was no evidence of alcohol involved. There was no marked bike lane where the crash occurred. No charges have been filed and the investigation is ongoing. Michael Rivas attended Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Hermitage where he helped with the sound system weekly. He regularly helped watch his brother’s children as well. “He helped take care of my family a lot,’’ Chris Rivas said. “He’s a great brother. I’ll miss him.”
