Source: A bicyclist is dead after troopers say that he was struck by a car on a Marion County road. According to troopers from the Marion post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash happened at 12:14 a.m. Saturday on Fairground Road east of Likens Chapel Road. A Honda Civic was travelling west on Fairground Road and the driver was attempting to overtake and pass another westbound vehicle. Troopers said that Nathan Smith, 18, was riding his bicycle westbound in the eastbound lane. He was struck from behind by the Honda Civic. Smith was ejected from the bicycle, and the Honda Civic drove off the right side of the road. Smith was transported to Marion General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Troopers said that Smith was not wearing a helmet or using any other safety equipment at the time of the crash. According to troopers, the driver of the Honda Civic initially left the scene of the crash, but later returned. The area where the crash occurred is a legal passing zone, according to the patrol. No charges have been filed at this time. Troopers say that the case will be reviewed by a Grand Jury. The crash remains under investigation.
