Source: Pete Cornell, NCAA and Big Ten finalist wrestler at the University of Michigan in the late 1960s, died Thursday from injuries sustained in a bicycling accident in Georgia. He was 64. Cornell and two friends were cycling from Alaska to the Florida Keys on a 3,500-mile trip when they were struck by a tractor-trailer in Dawson, Ga.. approximately 700 miles from their destination. One cyclist walked away from the accident, while a second is in critical condition with a broken neck. Peter Merland Cornell was born in Lansing, Mich. on October 14, 1947, the son of Merland and Laura Cornell. As a senior at Lansing Everett High School, Cornell won the 165-pound Michigan state wrestling championship. As a Wolverine wrestler from 1967-1969, Cornell was a three-time NCAA All-American, placing third at 167 pounds at the 1967 NCAAs, and fifth at the same weight in 1968. At the 1969 NCAAs, Cornell, who moved up to 177, made it to the finals, where he was pinned by Iowa State's Chuck Jean at 7:25. In addition, Cornell was a two-time Big Ten finalist (1967, 1969). Cornell owns the distinction of being only one of six Michigan wrestlers to have served as team captain for two seasons. He compiled an overall record of 51-11-1. According to the Michigan wrestling website, Cornell chose the Ann Arbor school over Michigan State and Central Michigan because he was permitted to play freshman football. He played both defensive and tight end. After graduating from Michigan in 1969, Cornell embarked on a lifelong career in real estate. He served as the CEO and President of the Ann Arbor Area Board of Realtors for more than 10 years. Cornell was also an avid cyclist. In 2010, he was welcomed into the Lansing Area Sports Hall of Fame.
