Source: A Northeast Austin family is in shock and mourning after a fatal crash Sunday night. Pete Valdez, 13, died on the side of Decker Lane near Larical Trail, when two cars hit him as he rode his bicycle. It happened just half a mile from his home. Pete’s family is still trying to grasp the reality of what happened. DPS troopers say Valdez was riding his bicycle on the inside lane of Decker. Orange spray paint marks where a Chrysler 300 came up from behind and hit the teen. The hit knocked Valdez into oncoming traffic. Trooper Robbie Barrera says a Nissan Sentra traveling in the opposite direction then hit Valdez. Both drivers stopped and tried to help, but Barrera says he died immediately. The speed limit is 60 miles-per-hour on that stretch of Decker Lane. There are no street lights, shoulders or sidewalks on either side of the road. The only sidewalk nearby was a few yards away. It is a small stretch of concrete that starts suddenly and ends just as abruptly. Valdez’s family says he left on Sunday to go to a friend's house and get new shoes for the first day of school. Valdez’s sister says the boys were going to trade sneakers. Valdez’s mother called to report him missing around midnight when he never came back home. Around 2 a.m. Monday his family says DPS troopers knocked on the door. The family is now clinging to the final memories they have. “Yesterday we had some good memories with him. We had a birthday party. Everybody was here. We got to see him laughing and playing with the kids and joking around with everybody. It was just supposed to be a party for me and my sisters, but all my family ended up coming together. We didn’t know we were going to spend the last days with him yesterday,” said his sister Crystal Gloria. The remnants of the family’s party are still scattered across the yard: bright colored pieces of confetti. Pete was one of nine children. His sisters say he was the fun-loving brother who made everyone laugh. The 13-year-old was just days away from his birthday. He would have turned 14 on Saturday. The family says they’re going to arrange his funeral before or after his birthday. Right now they’re figuring out how to pay for it all. Meanwhile DPS troopers continue their investigation. No charges were immediately filed against either driver who hit the teen.
