Source: A cyclist who rode hundreds of miles across country died just a few miles from home Tuesday, after he was hit by a car on his way to work. DPS Troopers said a woman driving a Chevy pickup truck hit 59-year-old Randy Solis on Ranch Road 470, about two miles from State Highway 16. He died at the scene. Solis started his spring journey in Ciudad Acuna and made it to Canada in 29 days. He rode 1,800 miles for fun and 40 5th and 6th graders from Medina ISD followed his journey through his blog. After he came home, he kept letters they had written him hanging in his office at the Medina Community Library. "He coined the phrase 'Best Little Library in Texas' and that's what he made it. In my eyes, it's the best little library in Texas," Mary Ellen Lindstrom said. Lindstrom said Solis was humble about his incredible journey, and even insisted that no party be thrown for him once he returned. "If you asked him for something, he'd say, 'my pencil is your pencil. My knife is your knife.' If he had it, he'd give it to you," she said. Solis planned to ride from Florida to California in 2015. The only problem he encountered in his cross-country journey was a flat tire. He road about 14 miles to work nearly every day, and was a "fixture" on the roadway from Bandera to Medina. Troopers say the woman who hit Solis stopped at the scene and has not been charged. Solis was not wearing a helmet. Department of Public Safety Trooper Anthony “Chip” Aragonas, who is investigating the incident, said no charges will be filed against the driver. The driver, a nurse, called 911 after the wreck. She collided with Solis from behind as each rode into the rising sun around a curve with virtually no shoulder on the right. Solis was killed instantly.

The accident report that said he was not wearing a helmet is untrue.  His helmet was knocked off his head and was later found down the embankment.  I knew this man well and he always wore his helmet even on the shortest trip and always on his 14 mile journey to work and back.

Hello, I’m Randy’s daughter, Melanie. My father was not only a cycling enthusiast, but he was also a cycling safety enthusiast. Initial reports claimed that my father was not wearing a helmet, but everyone that knew him, immediately knew that the claim was false. And that particular news station from which you are basing your information, was subsequently contacted by over a dozen people and called out for their irresponsible journalism; they later printed a correction. The helmet was taken with my father to the medical examiner’s office in San Antonio, and then returned to our family when they brought his body to the funeral home in Kerrville. I absolutely respect and support your cause on this site, however, regurgitating false information doesn’t promote anything of value. I know that your intentions are good, but if you’re going to do this, please do it right. My family has experienced enough pain; the last thing we need is to read disrespectful accusations from careless bloggers and journalists. Your words have power. Choose them wisely.
