Source: A Flanders man was struck by a vehicle and killed while riding his bicycle on Flanders Road on Friday night. Southampton Town Police said that Robert L. Nelson, 50, was riding north on Flanders Road a little before 7:45 p.m. when he was struck by a SUV near the intersection with Cypress Avenue. The accident was reported to police by members of the Flanders Fire Department who were responding to a fire alarm nearby. Police said it appears from the investigation of the incident that Mr. Nelson had veered into the northbound traffic lane just before being struck by the car, described as a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Police have not identified the driver of the vehicle, and no charges have been filed. Mr. Nelson sustained serious injuries in the accident and was treated by EMTs from the Flanders-Northahampton Volunteer Ambulance Corps before being transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
