Source: A bicyclist was found lying on the side of the road with serious head injuries around 6:45 Friday evening. North Royalton police say the victim, Ronald Cartwright, 63, of Parma, was traveling north on State Road near Oakridge Drive when a motorist made the startling discovery. “He was always there for us, no matter what it was, he would stop what he was doing and he would be there for you,” said Ronald’s son Lars Cartwright. “We’re holding it together but it’s very trying at this point.” Police say the bike was not damaged and there were no visible signs of debris or brake marks on the roadway. “I’d like to consider that you could be hit on your bike as you are traveling by a motorist and your bike may not be damaged, that is a possibility,” said North Royalton Detective Dave Loeding. “His injuries were to his head and face, which could have come from being knocked from his bike or it also could be the result of a medical condition.” Family members say Cartwright was active and healthy. His oldest son Lars said he rode his bike to work every day and just spent a week hiking the Appalachian Trail. “He may have not actually hit the vehicle. He may have swerved to try to avoid hitting the vehicle and may have crashed into the cement,” said Lars Cartwright. “This is a fairly main road. I’m sure someone had to see something. I’m not sure this is a hit-and-run, but if we could at least have closure and know why this happened.” An autopsy is underway. Until the cause of death is determined, loved ones are passing out flyers searching for clues into Cartwright’s death. The investigation continues. Updated Source: Nearly two weeks after a Parma man died from injuries sustained in a fall from his bicycle, police continue to investigate what exactly happened. Ronald Cartwright, 63, was riding his bike July 6 near State Road and Oakridge Drive when he somehow fell off. Police were notified by passersby at about 6:45 p.m. Cartwright, who was not wearing a helmet, sustained a head injury in the fall and was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center, where he died the next day. Police have interviewed four witnesses, three of which they feel are reliable, said North Royalton Patrolman Mark Fyock. However, none actually saw Cartwright fall from his bike. Police were told a black Chevrolet was seen turning away from the scene just before the accident, but do not know if it was involved. Fyock said a 30-foot skid mark led up to where Cartwright was found on the ground with his bike. Fyock said Cartwright being found by his bike would indicate there wasn’t a collision. "Usually, when there is a collision, 90 percent of the time the bike is going to get the short end of the deal and the rider will be thrown,” said Fyock. “But that wasn’t the case here. From an investigative standpoint, it would have been better if he’d hit a car. At least then we could figure out where he hit the vehicle and go from there.” Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call the North Royalton Police Department at (440) 237-8686.
