Source: A female bicyclist was killed Friday morning when she was struck by a stake-bed truck on East Coast Highway, police said. Officers and paramedics responded about 10:40 a.m. to reports of a crash involving a bicyclist and a truck near the southwest corner of East Coast Highway and Bayside Drive, Newport Beach police Sgt. Mark Hamilton said. The Orange County Coroner’s Office identified the woman as Sarah Leaf, 29, a Corona del Mar resident. She was pronounced dead at the scene, Hamilton said. The male driver remained at the scene. The initial investigation revealed the crash occurred when Leaf and the driver were traveling eastbound on East Coast Highway, Hamilton said. “We are conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the collision and are interviewing a number of witnesses that were at the scene at the time,” Hamilton said. Southbound Bayside was closed temporarily during the investigation. Updated Source: Police cleared the driver involved in a September crash that killed a 29-year-old cyclist, police said Wednesday. Sarah Leaf, a nutritionist from Corona del Mar, died Sept. 14 after a crash at Bayside Drive and East Coast Highway, authorities said at the time. In their investigation, police found that Leaf lost control of her bike when making a right turn onto Bayside Drive. Leaf and the truck's driver turned in the same direction at the same time, and Leaf fell under the truck before it ran over her, according to department spokeswoman Kathy Lowe. Lowe said drugs or alcohol were not a fact in the crash, and nothing indicated the bike and truck made contact before Leaf fell. The driver in the incident was not cited.
