Source: A 44-year-old man died early Saturday after his bicycle was struck by a man who fell asleep while operating a street sweeper, police said. The accident was reported at 5:20 p.m. Friday on Genesee Avenue at Lehrer Drive, said San Diego police Officer David Stafford. The bicyclist was riding south on Genesee in the bike lane. A 77-year-old man was driving the sweeper near the bike lane when it drifted and struck the rear of the bicycle. The cyclist suffered major head trauma and was taken to a hospital where he later died, Stafford said. The department's Traffic Division is investigating. Alcohol was not a factor, Stafford said. The victim was identified Monday by the county Medical Examiner's Office as Suntat Peverley, who lived with his family in Mira Mesa.
