Source: The Louisiana State Police are investigating a hit-and-run accident on Belle Chasse Highway on Wednesday that eventually ended with the death of a Gretna man, but authorities disagree on what caused that death. Timothy Durgin, 33, died on Thursday after being struck by a car while riding his bicycle on Belle Chasse Highway on Wednesday night. Durgin's death remains unclassified pending a review of his medical records by the Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office. Durgin was struck while traveling southbound on Belle Chasse Highway near Wright Avenue at about 9:20 p.m., said Trooper Melissa Matey. Durgin was riding against traffic when the accident occurred, she said. Investigators have not identified a suspect vehicle in the incident, and do not have any witnesses to the crash. Matey said that Durgin received moderate injuries in the crash and later died at LSU Interim Public Hospital in New Orleans. She said that the state police are investigating the incident as a hit-and-run with injury, not a traffic fatality. "He's not dead from injuries," Matey said. However, Mark Bone, an investigator with the Coroner's Office, said that complications from Durgin's injuries in the accident are what caused his death. If Durgin had not been hit by a car he would have never needed treatment. He compared it to someone who is paralyzed by a gunshot wound, and later dies from an infected bedsore. "If he was not injured in a bicycle accident than he would not have been in the hospital and developed complications," Bone said. Durgin's family was making funeral arrangements on Friday morning and not prepared to comment immediately.
