Source and additional comments from witness: Friday morning, July 6th I went out for a ride. Sadly, as sirens approached, I came upon the scene of a fellow bicyclist who had some moments before lost his front wheel (my conclusion) and crashed while pedaling down the River Front Trail near Tellulah Park in Appleton, Wisconsin. There were no witnesses to the crash. The victim who was being attended to by 3 bystanders was laying on a paved multi-use trail. His front wheel nearest a cross street, him, his bike, and his handlebar bag described a line spanning at least 30 feet. Based upon this and other evidence at the scene, it appeared that he lost his wheel as he crossed over the street at speed and crashed as a result. The wheel had a quick release spindle. The victim was not wearing a bicycle helmet or carrying identification. Through another source of information I learned that he was an active member of the Fox Cities Rowing Club which has a facility along the river at Tellulah Park in the direction he was heading. It is assumed by members of that club that he may have been using his bike as transportation to row that morning as he was known to do. The following obituary appeared yesterday: The Reverend Dr. Todd Murken, God's faithful servant, passed into the loving arms of his Lord in the early morning hours of Saturday July 7th, 2012. He died due to injuries incurred in a bicycling accident. Todd was the cherished son of Myrna Murken and the late Byron Murken. He was born in Harlan, Iowa on March 31, 1955. Todd was baptized on April 24, 1955 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. His confirmation was at Good Shepherd Lutheran, Oshkosh on March 30, 1969. Todd married Gisele Berninghaus in 1985 with whom he had his two beloved children Nathaniel, age 22, and Anastasia, age 19. On September 26th, 2009, a day full of joy and gladness, he married his wife Julie, who loves her Todd more than anyone will ever know. Their time together was too short, but was filled with laughter and joy~blessings without number and mercies without end. Todd loved his Lord and His Church with all his soul. He never tired in his pursuit of God's Truth, and his faith in Jesus' redeeming power was the foundation of his life. He worked diligently and tirelessly to bring all those he knew and loved into God's Grace. Todd's First Call was at Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church, New Sweden, Maine. His Doctoral studies were at Lutheran School of Theology, Chicago. Todd served as Co-Pastor at First English Lutheran Church, Oshkosh. Following his dissertation, he went on to serve as Interim Pastor at Grace Lutheran Church, Green Bay. He was an Instructor of Theology at ECS-W Lay School of Ministry. From 2000-2002, he served as Pastor of Grace Lutheran Church, Appleton. Todd served at Associate Pastor of Calvary Lutheran Church, Green Bay from 2002-2006. He was a member of Bishop's Theological Reflection Group from 2005 until present and Pastor at Holden Lutheran Parish from 2007 until present. Todd's sense of adventure knew no bounds. His home was in Appleton with Julie, but he lived in part on the sea and in the woodland countryside. No body of water was too great to sail or to kayak upon and no forest too remote to backpack through or to hike across. He never passed on an opportunity all the while to pause and watch the birds he was so fascinated by. This innate connection with the outdoors led him to become a proud Eagle Scout and Troup Chaplain for many years.
