Source: A Grand Prairie man was killed riding his bike home from work. The other driver stopped to help, but he died instantly. Candles burned and heads bowed Wednesday night to remember Tom Smith. The 46-year-old was riding home Monday night when he was hit and killed on the Highway 161 access road in Irving.The 21-year-old driver who hit him was not impaired or distracted, but she didn't see him in the dark and hit him from behind. She stopped to help and was not charged with any crime. Relatives said Smith was passionate about cycling and part of the Fort Worth Bike Association. His bike had reflectors and he always wore a helmet. His death was a tragic accident, they said. John Foster, pastor at Shepherd of Life Lutheran Church in Arlington where Smith was a leader as vice president of the congregation, said he was one of those people who just smiled and reassured everyone that it was going to be good because he believed that. "They are saying I love you to each other and hugging each other and doing what Tom always did, which was staying focused on those things in life that are most important," he said. Smith had just been recognized for his two decades of work at Microsoft. He was their "problem solver," the guy who got called in to fix computer systems across the globe. The Microsoft flag is now flying at half-staff outside the office. Smith leaves behind a wife and two sons, ages 6 and 8.
